Mastercard and PayPal unite to supercharge secure agentic commerce worldwide
The Partnership
Mastercard and PayPal have announced a strategic partnership that integrates Mastercard's Agent Pay technology into PayPal's global platform. The initiative targets the emerging agentic commerce market, where AI agents make purchases on behalf of users.
What Is Agentic Commerce?
Agentic commerce refers to transactions initiated by AI systems rather than human users directly. Examples:
- An AI assistant booking travel based on your calendar and preferences
- An AI purchasing office supplies when inventory falls below threshold
- An AI paying invoices within approved parameters
The Mastercard-PayPal partnership creates a secure, identity-verified infrastructure for these transactions.
The Technical Architecture
Agent Pay works through a credential tokenization system. Rather than exposing payment credentials to AI systems, tokenized credentials allow AI agents to transact within defined parameters:
- Spending limits
- Merchant category restrictions
- Time-based authorisations
- Purpose-specific permissions
What Operators Need to Know
For merchants and operators, the agentic commerce wave creates both opportunity and requirement:
New transaction types. AI-initiated transactions have different characteristics than human transactions. Fraud patterns, chargeback rates, and compliance profiles differ.
Identity verification challenges. Verifying the human ultimately responsible for an AI-initiated transaction requires new frameworks.
Integration requirements. Supporting agentic payments requires API capabilities that not all payment processors currently offer.
The infrastructure being built today will define who is positioned to capture agentic commerce volume.
