Wrong PSP, Wrong Game. Get Out.

The PSP Decision Is Not Procurement

Most operators treat PSP selection like buying software: compare features, compare prices, sign the contract. This is a fundamental mistake.

Your payment service provider relationship is a partnership that will make or break your operation. The wrong choice doesn't just cost you fees. It can cost you your entire revenue stream.

How the Wrong PSP Destroys Businesses

Sudden termination. Without notice, accounts are frozen and funds held. This happens more often than you'd think, especially in high-risk sectors.

Rolling reserves. Aggressive rolling reserves can lock up 10-20% of your revenue for 6 months or more. For growing businesses, this is existential.

Rate escalation. Introductory rates that balloon after 3 months once you're dependent on the relationship.

Poor approval rates. A PSP without the right acquiring relationships for your market will have approval rates 15-20% below optimal. At scale, this is massive revenue loss.

What "Future Sellers" Look Like

A "future seller" is a PSP that's great at sales and poor at service. Warning signs:

  • Promises of custom rates before even seeing your processing history
  • Vague answers about which acquirers they work with
  • No dedicated account management at the relationship level
  • Terms that favour reserve accumulation
  • No transparent chargeback management process

Building the Right Infrastructure

The answer isn't just finding a better PSP. It's building redundant infrastructure:

Primary + backup acquiring. Two active PSP relationships, both processing real volume. Not a dormant backup that hasn't been tested.

Cascading logic. When a transaction fails at PSP A, it automatically retries at PSP B. Smart routing based on card type, geography, and historical performance.

Monitoring. Real-time visibility into approval rates, chargeback ratios, and processing costs across all providers.

The businesses that survive long-term in high-risk processing are not the ones who found the perfect PSP. They're the ones who built infrastructure that doesn't depend on any single relationship.
